Area Teachers Win Bright Idea Grants

HILLSBOROUGH, N.C., November 24, 2008—Teachers throughout the area are on the receiving end of more than $20,800 in grants, thanks to a joint venture between Piedmont Electric Membership Corporation and the NC Association of Electric Cooperatives.
The grants are part of the annual recognition of innovative teaching projects in our local schools—the Bright Ideas Grant Program.
The Bright Ideas program provides grants to teachers for classroom projects that would not otherwise be funded. North Carolina’s Touchstone Energy cooperatives have funded a variety of hands-on projects, including endeavors in music, art, history, language, reading, science and information technology.
Since its inception in 1994, Bright Ideas has awarded more than $5.9 million in grant money to North Carolina’s teachers to sponsor more than 5,500 projects touching the lives of nearly one million students across our state.
Winning grants are chosen by an independent panel of judges. This year’s winners include:
• Nancy Huskins, Sara Sink and Patti Perrou; Turrentine Middle School, Burlington; “Got Book? Read On”
• Kristen Bedell, Stacy Lingle and Kim McColman; Efland Cheeks Elementary School, Efland; “What’s the Weather?”
